Vocabulary
Prompt
The text (or speech) you give a model: instructions, questions, and whatever context you want it to use.
Also called: prompting · prompt engineering
A prompt is the interface. Menus and buttons still exist, but more of the day starts with saying what you want. “Prompt engineering” got oversold as secret spells; clearer instructions and better context usually beat magic words.
The prompt is also where RAG dumps retrieved passages, where system policies hide, and where yesterday’s chat turns accumulate until the window fills up. Managing that pile often matters more than a clever opening line.
